A study of the relationship among self-esteem, social support and self-care compliance in hemodialysis patients

|
Background and Objective: It is very hard for hemodialysis patient to compliance the self-care. This study was to identify the relationship between self-esteem, social support and self-care compliance in the hemodialysis patients.
Materials and Method: The subjects were 102 patients on the hemodialysis unit in Kwangju. The data was collected through the use of questionnaire from Feb. 22 to Mar. 15, 1999. The instruments used for this study were the Rosenberg¡¯ s self-esteem scale, the social support scale by Kim and the self-care compliance scale developed by the researcher. The data was analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearsori s correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analysis with the SPSS PC+ program.
Results: 1. There was no significant correlation between selfesteem and self-care compliance(r= .053, p= .61). 2. There was significant correlation between social support and self-care compliance(r= .241 p= .02). 3. The regression analysis showed that the duration of hemodialysis, social support, sex were significantly predictive of the self-care compliance of hemodialysis patients. These three variables explained 30.5% of the variance in self-care.
Conclusion: There was significant correlation between social support and self-care compliance.
